Moderator: Bob Oertel
Secretary: Belmont Trapp

The Precinct 4 Community Oriented Policing & Government group (COPS) meets every fourth Thursday at 5:30PM at the Precinct 4 Headquarters located at 3304 North State Street in Fondren.

The content on this Website is intended to keep the Precinct 4 Community in Jackson, MS informed, and is as accurate as possible. Our purpose is to provide a forum and network that includes citizens, the Jackson Police Department, and officials at all levels of government. Through short and long-term strategies we hope to create a healthy environment to share information pertinent to crime awareness & prevention, government activities, and the legislative process.

COPS is a national program that was created by the Department of Justice in 1994 and was implemented in Jackson in the fall of 2003.  Community policing is defined as "a policing philosophy that promotes and supports organizational strategies to address the causes and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through problem-solving tactics and police-community partnerships."  Visit the DOJ official website http://www.cops.usdoj.gov/.

Community policing represents a shift from more traditional law enforcement in that it focuses on prevention of crime and the fear of crime on a very local basis. Community policing puts law enforcement professionals to work with citizens and city officials so they can build mutually beneficial relationships with the people they serve. By earning the trust of the members of their communities and making those individuals stakeholders in their own safety, community policing makes law enforcement safer and more efficient.  This, we hope, makes Jackson a safer and better city for all.

If you have any concerns or issues that you want to discuss during a meeting, please let Bob Oertel know. Remember, if you have anything to report regarding properties and code violations, please use this action request form. Fill it out and bring it to the meeting for submission.
